Enough is Enough! Falmouth Community Protests against the Cost of Living Crisis

Updated: Jan 5, 2023

On October 1st, Falmouth's local community joined in with over 50 countrywide protests to say "Enough is Enough" to the Cost of Living Crisis. The people of Falmouth have suffered previous hardships due to the ongoing housing crisis in Cornwall and brought with them a fighting spirit to make a change. The protest was held on The Moor, Falmouth and attended by more than 100 people. Speakers from workers unions and local businesses took to the stand to share their views and hopes for a future of change.

Speakers included Acorn Union secretary, Dan Newcome, Robbie Woodland of the Bakers Union Kernow, Green Party Cornwall Councillor, Tamsin Widdon, Labour Cornwall Councillor, Laurie Magowan and local business owner and co-founder of the Cornish Bank, Rufus Maurice.

'Enough is Enough' has five key demands: A real pay rise, Slashing energy bills, Ending food poverty, Decent housing for all and Tax the rich. These were all points touched on by the speakers:

"A real pay rise means wages should be linked to inflation so that no worker has a real terms pay cut. We slash energy bills by nationalising the energy companies and putting them under workers control. We have enough food on this planet to feed ten billion people so nobody should be going hungry. We get rid of second home ownership, nationalise the land and begin a campaign of mass house to house building. And never mind taxing the rich, I say expropriate them. Their profits have come off the backs of the working class, therefore everything that they have earned belongs to us."

Local artist Peter Blodau (@blodaupeter) and his daughter documented the protest in their own unique way, by illustrating it.

After all the speeches finished, the protesters then took to the streets of Falmouth Town, sharing their message with the Saturday shoppers until they reached The Maritime Museum. They shouted chants such as, "I can't pay to heat my home, Tory scum have got to go" and "We are the Liz Truss haters".

“That’s solidarity, that’s how we win”

The event was a great turnout and successful in spreading the message they wanted to share. To keep up to date with the 'Enough is Enough' campaign, follow @eiecampaign on instagram.
